A Mother for Me

A mother perched upon the shore--
One of those that came before--
She cast a stone and set the sail,
Hiding behind a shadowed veil--
Alone I stood through terror's night,
Cold and crying out of fright,
Shouting loud, I called her name,
But back for me she never came.
Twice the scene unfolds again:
A change of mind, perhaps a whim,
A mother's love too hard to win.
Twice a woman promised to be
A mother to the child in me.
When at last all hope was gone,
When at last, there was no dawn,
One more woman came along;
One more lady promised to be
A mother to the child in me.
She came to me every night;
She gave me hope, she gave me light;
Long years of pain she erased,
And held me in her warm embrace;
Endless hours she sat and talked,
And in my shoes, she has walked.
She taught me trust in tiny bites,
And helped me soar to new heights.
Each day I've grown to love her more,
Replacing those that came before;
She's the one for whom I've yearned,
The name of Mom she has earned.
